Who says a boudoir photo shoot has to be done in a bedroom setting? Since I am located in Los Angeles, there are many fun and unusual locations available to do a boudoir photo shoot.

The reason I chose this particular location at the LA Old Zoo for this particular woman was her fun long braided hair. I visualized her in a funky, fun and off beat environment. The Old Zoo in Los Angeles offered itself perfectly as a colorful and interesting backdrop.

If you have never been at the Old Zoo, it is worth a trip through the narrow caves, cages and graffiti, they are fun to explore. You may have to squeeze yourself through fences and small openings. Be careful where to step, there is lots of glass and gravel.

We had fun getting ready at my house where we normally do our bedroom setting boudoir photo shoots. My makeup artist does an amazing job of accentuating a woman’s features to make her even more beautiful.

Then we made our short drive over to Griffith Park. We brought a big blanket to hold up to cover our model while she changed her outfits. It is not a very crowded location, so changing is quite easy.

There was another photo shoot going on right next to us in another part of the cages, as this place is very popular with other photographers. Our shoot was with minimal equipment, just a camera, a reflector and an ice light and we didn’t pull a permit with the city…shhhht! For larger projects, such as commercials with lots of equipment I would recommend checking with the city and getting a permit.

Youngsters use this place to express themselves through graffiti. The blue graffiti below was literally still wet and we smelled the spray paint, someone must have just finished this work of art.

My favorite spot here was the narrow stairs with a metal cage door at the end, the walls are full of colorful spray paint and the steps are illuminated with beautiful natural light. I didn’t use any flash or fill light, just as is.

It was great to have an assistant help carrying cloths, water and spot me while climbing with my camera in hand. She also snapped some images with her iphone to show behind the scene images.

We left all the trash as we found it there, I think it is more authentic and adds to the contrast of beauty in an environment of disrepair.

I always take some time to show my ladies how beautiful they look on camera. It is so encouraging and surprising to them. A lot of time they will say, ‘Wow! Is that really me?!’ ‘Yup’ , I say ‘You look amazing!’ .

We wrapped it up after I filled two SD  cards and we had more than enough images to work with. I don’t like to go on and on, but finish on a high note. After 1.5-2 hours of shooting the model and myself are getting tired, especially on a hot day like it was.

I would love to hear your feedback!

Bio

Hi, my name is Beate Pilgreen, I was born and raised in a small town in South West Germany, where I pursued fashion, modeling and fitness. I fell in love with California in 1992 and moved permanently to Los Angeles to enjoy the sun and the beach.

I always loved photography, because when I look at photos it brings back memories and feelings from the moment they were taken. That is why I have taken a gazillion photos of my two kids growing up. We love to sit, look at old photos, laugh and remember what it was like.

Approaching my 50s rapidly and raising 2 teenagers in a busy household I have come to understand the value of taking care of myself and how to refuel my energy levels so I am a better version of Me. Sometimes taking a few hours exclusively for myself can work wonders.

A few years back I discovered how much confidence and empowerment a well organized photoshoot would bring me. Often I don’t like to have my pictures taken, because I don’t wear makeup, have my hair in a bun or wear unflattering clothes. When I decided to do a boudoir shoot for my husband’s birthday I quickly realized that it was more a gift to myself than for him. I felt sexy, desireable and beautiful again, just like before having children.

That confident feeling is what I want other women to experience. I am passionate about boudoir photography, because it highlights the beauty of every women no matter what age, size, shape or color.

I love the creative preparation to hunt for props as well as the actual process of shooting and editing which is always interesting and different. At the end it is very fulfilling to have created a lasting beautiful memory for another women to keep.
