Who says a boudoir photo shoot has to be done in a bedroom setting? Since I am located in Los Angeles, there are many fun and unusual locations available to do a boudoir photo shoot.

The reason I chose this particular location at the LA Old Zoo for this particular woman was her fun long braided hair. I visualized her in a funky, fun and off beat environment. The Old Zoo in Los Angeles offered itself perfectly as a colorful and interesting backdrop.

If you have never been at the Old Zoo, it is worth a trip through the narrow caves, cages and graffiti, they are fun to explore. You may have to squeeze yourself through fences and small openings. Be careful where to step, there is lots of glass and gravel.

We had fun getting ready at my house where we normally do our bedroom setting boudoir photo shoots. My makeup artist does an amazing job of accentuating a woman’s features to make her even more beautiful.

Then we made our short drive over to Griffith Park. We brought a big blanket to hold up to cover our model while she changed her outfits. It is not a very crowded location, so changing is quite easy.

There was another photo shoot going on right next to us in another part of the cages, as this place is very popular with other photographers. Our shoot was with minimal equipment, just a camera, a reflector and an ice light and we didn’t pull a permit with the city…shhhht! For larger projects, such as commercials with lots of equipment I would recommend checking with the city and getting a permit.

Youngsters use this place to express themselves through graffiti. The blue graffiti below was literally still wet and we smelled the spray paint, someone must have just finished this work of art.

My favorite spot here was the narrow stairs with a metal cage door at the end, the walls are full of colorful spray paint and the steps are illuminated with beautiful natural light. I didn’t use any flash or fill light, just as is.

It was great to have an assistant help carrying cloths, water and spot me while climbing with my camera in hand. She also snapped some images with her iphone to show behind the scene images.

We left all the trash as we found it there, I think it is more authentic and adds to the contrast of beauty in an environment of disrepair.

I always take some time to show my ladies how beautiful they look on camera. It is so encouraging and surprising to them. A lot of time they will say, ‘Wow! Is that really me?!’ ‘Yup’ , I say ‘You look amazing!’ .

Behind the scenes Los Angeles Old Zoo boudoir photo shoot

We wrapped it up after I filled two SD  cards and we had more than enough images to work with. I don’t like to go on and on, but finish on a high note. After 1.5-2 hours of shooting the model and myself are getting tired, especially on a hot day like it was.

I would love to hear your feedback!

Cheers,

My boudoir studio is located in the beautiful hills in Los Angeles, CA. I get to spend my days with a variety of ladies, from movie stars to house wives who get their boudoir photos taken. My clients come in different shapes, ages and colors. The one thing they all have in common is that they are beautiful the way they are!

I like to get to know my clients while they get their professional hair and makeup done in my living room. We chat, laugh and I find out who they are and what their motivation is to get their boudoir photos done.

In this blog post I want to focus on poses and some tips and tricks I use to make each session successful and happy.

We will look at their selection of lingerie and we decide which setting and lingerie will work best.

Posing and angles are crucial in boudoir photography.  It is important to make each pose look natural and effortless, though some poses are frankly very uncomfortable. The truth is a boudoir photo shoot will give you a nice workout!

The pictures below are my top boudoir poses with some variations, along with some tips and trick of the trade.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

I start each session  with an easy, comfortable pose like sitting on the legs. I check the bra straps and make sure they are not twisted and no tags are showing. I ask clients to cut out their tags before their session. It is easier to fix this before the photo shoot, than to fix it later in Photoshop.

To avoid rolls under her neck I remind her to lift their chin, especially for the more mature or curvier models.  A good trick is to tell her to stick out her neck like a turtle, extended towards the camera. If it doesn’t help use a little higher camera angle.

Most of the time I will tell my clients to cock their head to one side, it will give them a more feminine open look. It works like charm!

As a photographer we always look for ways to make the waist look smaller and pronounce natural curves. Choosing the right angle is critical as well as the poses. Using an an angle from the top shooting down will slim any body shape and avoids chin rolls.

The only danger is forehead wrinkles when looking up. To avoid that I let her close their eyes until I am ready for the shot and them let look up at the count of three.

Not every pose will work on every woman. A good photographer will find the right poses for each women. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You will learn from them and if a pose doesn’t work as well, just move on to another pose.

Every body has a different mobility and moves differently, so there is not one pose fits all, but there are basic poses that look good on most woman. One of those poses is laying on the back and photographing from a low angle. It will flatten the stomach , pronounce the chest and feature beautiful eyes and eye lashes.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Topless or nudes can be implied, it makes for a very classy, sexy and sensual image without showing private parts. Sometimes I use hair, hands, sheets or a specific angle to cover nipples.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Just slightly position hands or the head a bit differently in each shot and it will give each image a new look. I will tell my clients to touch an earring, a bra strap or hair. It is always good to occupy the hands in a purposeful way. For a bride or a married women I will want to feature her engagement or wedding ring.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Another good way to flatten a stomach is with arms up, arching the lower back sucking in the tummy. Lifting the leg in this position looks great, but is uncomfortable for most of us. I let the ladies rest in between shots.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Standing poses can be challenging, clients often feel self conscious and vulnerable standing up. High heels will help to lengthen the legs and pronounce her behind. Legs crossed will add to an hour glass shape.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Another more comfortable way of standing would be leaning against a wall. To pronounce her butt and legs, angle the back leg and keep the front leg straight.

When her pose looks forced or unnatural,  I will tell her to shake out her arms and legs, I will do the same thing and it just makes us look silly and we usually laugh. Then we try a similar pose, it works like a charm to get her relaxed.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Have her hug herself! It will enhance her chest and cleavage from different angles. It also can hide skin folds in a mid section and in a side view raising the shoulders a bit it will also eliminate skin folds on the back.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Another way to enhance the appearance of more cleavage is the on the belly and shoot from the front. That is also a great pose to hide some extra pounds, especially when a lady is worried about her belly.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

I love angles! I move around the model while she is in the same pose, because she looks different in each angle without having to move. For unusual angles I use a ladder (be careful!) or lay flat on my stomach depending what type of shot I am after.

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

My clients are not models and for the most part I guide them through the whole session, tell them where to look, what to do with their hands and how to hold their head.

I watch my clients carefully, the way they move and keep an eye on them when directing them to change positions. Often the best poses are in between shots when moving from one position into another. My client will be shifting her body naturally to switch poses and I will tell her to stop right there, because it looks AMAZING!

Boudoir Photography Poses -Tips and Tricks - Best Boudoir LA , Los Angeles. Visit http://bestboudoirla.com for more info!

Positive feedback goes a long way! Sometimes I get very excited about a series we did and I will stop, sit next to my client and we look in camera together to see what we captured. I always love the, ‘Oh wow, is that really me?!’ comment! Yes, I say, it is all you!

To wrap up my shoot I will ask if there is any pose she would love to try and we didn’t cover yet. That will give her the opportunity to be creative and sometimes daring. Each shoot ends on a happy excited note and it seems like we got to know a lot about each other.

If you have questions about posing of about boudoir in general, please contact me. I would be happy to talk to you!

Sexy Sixties and Seventies Boudoir

Best Boudoir LA sexy over sixty photo shoot featured in Huffington Post.

As a photographer I meet wonderful individuals every day, let me tell you about my encounter with an extraordinary lady I had the honor to shoot recently (pictured in this blog post).

Sabine Reichel a seasoned internationally published author, also advocate for women with gray hair, publisher of the popular Gray in LA Blog was recently featured in HuffingtonPost50 describing her boudoir experience with me as her photographer.

Best Boudoir LA sexy over sixty photo shoot featured in Huffington Post.

Namely this lady has caused me to think about my own struggles with age. I am turning 50 this year and somehow the thought, I AM TOO OLD ! has twisted my brain since my childhood.

At 11, I thought I was too old playing with barbies. At 25 I felt too old to model, at 38 I felt too old for child birth, at 45 I felt I was too old to start a new career…

Seriously! That’s just a bunch of bullshit, excuse my French!

Yes, there may be actual physical limitations, such as giving birth after menopause, but let’s be honest, most of our preconceived  notions of age are constructed in or heads and are directly influenced by what the media has presented us over the years. Sometimes it takes inspiration from ladies around us to change our outlook on age.

When I met 69 year old Sabine Reichel at an event at the posh Edison in Los Angeles I was mesmerized by her positive attitude regarding her age. She shared with me that she was contemplating to reignite her modeling career… at age 69! I was not only impressed by her flawless skin, but also by her strong feministic expression and her I-don’t-give-a-damn-what-others-think philosophy.

At the end of the evening we had not only found a new friendship, but we also planned to do a photo shoot together.  Sabine is a free spirit and since boudoir is my forte, she was game for a sexy lingerie shoot. Needless to say I was thrilled! I specialize in women over 40 and 50, to have a lady close to 70 was a great addition to my repertoire.

Best Boudoir LA sexy over sixty photo shoot featured in Huffington Post.

Yes, this lady was blessed with amazing genes, but it is her bravery and open mindedness that allowed her to discover this new side of herself.  Wrinkles, gray hair or an aching hip? So what! Get over it!

Have you ever seen photos of young super models without make up taken from an unfortunate angle…unedited? Not so hot either! So why should images  of mature ladies be different? It is the lighting the angles, makeup and editing that will make the difference for anybody in front of the camera, trust me!

Ladies of any age, do yourself a favor and don’t buy into the lies of our society, that older women should’t be shown as sensual beings.

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, SEXY AND POWERFUL!

10 best reasons to do a boudoir photoshoot

10 best reasons to do a boudoir photoshoot ~by Best Boudoir LA in Los Angeles

Have you wondered why you hear about boudoir photography a lot lately? And what does it really mean?

Boudoir is the french word for a private sitting room or bedroom of a lady. It is a specific genre in photography, typically shot in a private setting of a bedroom, sometimes in a decadent hotel room. Boudoir photography shows ladies in  lingerie, implied nudity and in seductive and sexy poses. A skilled photographer will adjust most flattering poses to fit different body types.

Who in the world are these women and why would they show themselves in barely clothed? …

This type of photography is literally suited for every woman, any shape, age or size! Most of my clients are women like you and I and not experienced in modeling in any way. I always ask women coming to my studio what their motivations or reasons are for their boudoir photoshoot and ta ta ta…here are the top 10 reasons from my personal experience.

  1. Gift for their groom: One of my last clients planned a couple of months ahead of her wedding day to present her husband to be with an album of her with her veil…only her veil..oh and a garterbelt! She left it beautifully wrapped in the room where the groom was getting ready on their wedding day. Can you imagine how excited he was to run to the altar?! 10 best reasons to do a boudoir photoshoot ~by Best Boudoir LA in Los Angeles
  2. Personal Challenge: Usually my bookings are planned at least 3-4 weeks ahead of time. When I received a phone call one morning to accomodate the same day for two ladies I was almost going to turn them down. It was my day off and my makeup girl was out of town. However my heart opened up when the lady on the other end explained that she and her friend were attending a personal growth seminar and had to face one of their biggest fears, to show their bodies in front of a camera, the same day! Needless to say somehow we made this appointment work! The two ladies were absolutely beautiful inside and out and they were thrilled at the end of the day, we provided proof that they finished their boudoir session.10 best reasons to do a boudoir photoshoot ~by Best Boudoir LA in Los Angeles

3. Celebrating a birthday: Of course any birthday is a great reason to create photo memories, but my favorite ones are the milestones. 30, 40, 50 and 60! I am turning 50 next year and I have already planned to have amazing pictures done by one of my awesome collegues. I happen to love pictures, because I am a super visual person and associate pictures with how I was feeling at the time. Do you remember what you felt like at 20? And what did you look like? Were you happy?

4. A breakup: I’ve had several clients who came to me right after a breakup. That  may sound strange, but makes total sense to me. Women go through a lot of emotions during a breakup and long for a change in their personal affairs, for a confidence boost or some reassurance that they are still desirable and beautiful. To let a professional makeup artist and photographer do their magic shows their readiness to open a new chapter!

10 best reasons to do a boudoir photoshoot ~by Best Boudoir LA in Los Angeles

5. For an anniversary: Half of the women coming to me for a boudoir photoshoot are married and have an anniversary coming up to surprise their husbands. It is even more fun when ladies tell me they never wear makeup or lingerie and that it would be completely out of character. Their significant other wouldn’t expect a sexy photo album of the woman they thought they knew. It makes a wonderful surprise and unexpected gift!

6. Weightloss: A couple of my clients came back for a second or third shoot after they lost a significant amount of weight and wanted to celebrate their new look with brand new boudoir photos. Though they loved their pictures before, they wanted to see what they actually looked like 20 lbs lighter. Also they get to go shopping for clothing they weren’t able to fit before.

7. Pregnancy: Maternity boudoir is a special celebration for the baby to come. It is absolutely lovely to see how beautiful a pregnant woman glows. Yes a photoshoot can be tiring and it’s hard to move around, legs maybe swollen or skin too tight, but believe me that all is forgotten when the pictures are ready.  The baby belly is an amazing memory which most often is forgotten about. I wish I had thought about doing a photoshoot with my belly, I missed out!

8. Spice things up: There is nothing more sexy than to play a little dress up, to get a bit adventurous and naughty! Some of the ladies I shoot with tell me that they are bored with their 8-5 trott at work and want to add a bit of excitement to their life. Whether they are with a significant other or not is irrelevant.

9. Show off a tattoo or piercing:  Tattoos and piercings are the rage right now and half of the women I shoot have at least one or two tattoos or piercings they would like to feature in their boudoir photos. Often their ink is in private places that won’t ever show, unless they wear very little. A boudoir shoot is the perfect occassion to show them off.

10 best reasons to do a boudoir photoshoot ~by Best Boudoir LA in Los Angeles

10. Empower oneself: I am sure you have heard it before, a boudoir photoshoot is very empowering to a women. This is the number one comment after a boudoir shoot I get “I feel so empowered!” Why is that? The ladies are allowed to get in touch with their sensuality in a safe environment. Nobody is here to judge, on the contrary, the photographer encourages and draws out the most beautiful assets of their clients and help them to express their individual sexuality.

10 best reasons to do a boudoir photoshoot ~by Best Boudoir LA in Los Angeles

Actualy I could list a bunch more reasons why a boudoir photoshoot is so awesome. Have you ever done one? What was your personal experience? Are you hesitant to book a boudoir session and why? I would love to hear from you!

Husband's email of photoshopped boudoir photos go viral-Why he wanted to see her all natural.

Viral email of husband’s response of wive’s photoshopped boudoir photos

Husband's email of photoshopped boudoir photos go viral

Note: This is not the lady mentioned in the email or post.

As a boudoir photographer and female myself I understand the dilemma of editing very private images of my clients carefully. I usually take my time to discuss in detail what my client is looking for and how to make them happy and satisfied with their boudoir photo session and their edited digitals.

Many of the photos will be printed in a beautiful album or even become wall art, therefore they needs to be on point. However it is desireable to keep the photos as natural as possible.

I have had  a situation where a lady wanted to slim her face, nose and body significantly, to make her look like a different version of herself. After pointing out that the finished product may not resemble who she was she still wanted to follow through with a very heavy edit. It was not what I would choose for my client, but at the end of the day I want to make my boudoir clients happy!

It is always amazing to see the reaction of a significant other to the reveal of the images. I would love to be there for all of them, because they are usually very emotional and for the photographer rewarding and fulfilling. Most of my feedback is from my female clients directly and they will report me how much their husband’s like their images.

Of course there are some responses that may be more witheld and private, but wouldn’t it be great to hear directly from the one person the photoshoot was for?

That is exactlty what happened to my collegue Victoria Caroline Haltom in San Antonio, who received a very honest and touching response from a loving husband, who missed some “flaws” he loves about his wife.

Read the full email below

( Warning! It may tear you up):

“These pictures…while they are beautiful and you are a very talented photographer…they are not my wife,” he said.

His heartfelt message continued with, “when you took away her stretch marks, you took away the documentation of my children. When you took away her wrinkles, you took away over two decades of our laughter, and our worries. When you took away her cellulite, you took away her love of baking and all the goodies we have eaten over the years.”

After posting this heartfelt reaction to her social media Haltom received an overwhelming response which has since then became viral.

Not only clients, but also friends of mine noticed and send me this post. How do you feel about your photos? Would you like to erase some of your unwanted features or are you happy with what you have?

How to create a portable flower wall backdrop for photography

Flower wall photography backdrop

Recently I created a 4’x6′ flower backdrop for my photo studio. This project took about 25 hours( over 3 days) and $150 to do. So it is actually very time consuming and not cheap, but the end result is great and very unique!

Flower wall backdrop for photography

I had seen a flower wall in photos on IG and loved the colorful happy feel it gave the photo. I actually contacted the photographer personally to find out where I could purchase the backdrop. She graciously returned my inquiry by telling me she had built her flower wall herself. Looking at her photos it appeared that her wall was stationary in a designated area of her studio.

My studio is small and I have to rearrange backdrops to accomplish different looks in my humble space. Therefore I knew that my flower wall I was about to create had to be portable and lightweight for that matter. Now I can use it in portrait or landcsape format.

Flower wall maternity photoshoot

I settled for a insulation board from Homedepot which has one silver reflective side and was like $20. The board is super light and was 8’x4′, too large to fit in my car, so I asked to get it cut down to 6’x4′. I kept the cutoff piece. (I use the cut off piece as a reflector now).

Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 8.33.54 AM

My local dollar store is Dollar King in Glendale, CA and I bought a load of different colored silk flowers. My color theme is mainly kept pinks, reds, white and some yellow. During my project I went back 2 times to get more flowers and alltogether spent around $110 in flowers( if I had gone to my craft store it would have been easily double the amount) I also spent $20 for a new glue gun and glue sticks.

Flower wall photography backdrop

I decided to use the silver side of the board, because I was afraid that the blue print would have showed through th flowers. In hind sight I could have covered that side with white paper or duct tape to cover as I discovered later the silver would peek through a bit and show reflection and I had to add flowers super tightly to cover every bit of the board.

I pulled off the flowers it’s stems, but kept the single green base on each flower then and poked a hole with the hard green flower base individually into the board and then hot glued every single flower into the board. I carefully mixed up my colors and types of flowers.

11037050_10206658408091378_2611025345008036142_n

This process is tedious and very time consuming. I don’t see how to speed up the process, except maybe to have multiple people help from each corner. Also if you try to cover your board with a white surface it may also beneficial as you could possibly spread your flowers slightly apart.flower wall

I was afraid to let my teenagers help me with gluing the flowers, because I thought it may show later different styles, therefore I dedicated my time to do this project all by myself.

The wall becomes a little bit heavier with the flowers on, but it s still light enough to handle bymyself easily, I can even transport it in my car if I want.Flower wall and chinese umbrella

I have done several photo shoots with it and love that I have it, though if I had known about the amount of work invloved I may not have done it.

Old Hollywood Charm Boudoir for Today’s Ladies

Boudoir photography Los Angeles poses

When I look at the old time black and white movie star photos I get a sense of glamour and chic that today’s photography is sometimes lacking. Modern photography is beautiful as well and eye or lip color can enhance a photo, sometimes an HDR post production will add interest.

However in this series of photos I wanted to recreate the feel of Old Hollywood using black and white photography, lighting, hair and makeup. Rather than using flash photography I like using continuous light, especially spot lighting to add shadows and drama. My makeup artist did a wonderul job enhancing this lady’s hair and makeup with a touch of 50s style.

Boudoir Photography los Angeles poses

Another tool is to add the right props for a photo shoot like this. To keep things simple I like to use black backgrounds and satin sheets as seen in many black and white photos. Of course vintage furniture or lingerie are a nice touch as well, though not absolutely necessary.

I really like the outcome of these black and white photos and use them quite often on my client’s photos. Albums of this type are especially nice as they seem to be right out of another era and there is a surprise element when the viewer realizes that the woman pictured is their own wife, a soccer mom or friend.
